Students prepare to tour nation's capital in June

Benjamin Hoyt, 16, of Elyria Catholic High School, and Jessica Welter, 16, of Black River High School, have been chosen as the recipients of the seven-day, all-expensepaid trip to Washington, D.C., in the Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative 2009 Youth Tour awards program.

Ben is the son of Jack and Barbara Hoyt of New Russia Township, and Jessica is the daughter of Neal and Melody Welter of Sullivan Township.

Ben and Jessica will be visiting Washington, D.C., in June along with representatives from Ohio’s other electric cooperatives. En route to Washington, they will spend their first night in Gettysburg.

Among the attractions they will see include the U.S. Capitol, Smithsonian Institution, Navy Yard, Vietnam Memorial, Mount Vernon and the Kennedy Center.

They also will be guests on an evening cruise on the Potomac River. They will meet with Ohio congressional representatives and attend Youth Day, where the students will get information in hopes they will continue to support electric cooperatives and the rural electric program.

They are eligible to represent Ohio on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Youth Leader - ship Council. If selected, they will be eligible to serve on the YLC at the NRECA convention in February in Atlanta.

Ben is involved in Academic Challenge, Drama Club, 4-H, football, Elyria Cluster Youth Ministry and bowling.

At Black River, Jessica is involved in the gaming club, Animé club and ski club. She is a member of the Lorain County Farm Bureau.

The competition was based on the student’s scholastic record, a competitive examination consisting of general information about cooperatives, questions pertaining to LMRE and a recommendation letter submitted by a school or community official.
