Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative will conduct a special trustee election to fill the unexpired term of Trustee Phil A. Schneiter, who passed away last month.
The cooperative's Code of Regulations gives the board the authority to appoint someone from the district to fill vacancies. At their March 10 meeting, the eight remaining members of the LMRE Board of Trustees opted to conduct a special trustee election to appoint someone to fill the remaining two years of Schneiter's unexpired term ending in July 2014. The district includes LMRE's service territory in Clear Creek, Jackson, Orange, Sullivan and Troy townships in northern Ashland County.
"Our annual meeting is in July," said LMRE Board President Ken Diedrick. "With two years still remaining in Phil's term, the board felt we have ample time to conduct an election and let the cooperative members in Phil's district determine who they want to represent them on the board."
Nomination petitions are available at the cooperative's office at 22898 West Road in Wellington. Candidates have until Friday, April 27 to submit petitions.
Candidates must secure at least 25 signatures from district residents. If more than two candidates file petitions, a special run-off election will be conducted by mail in May. The two candidates who collect the most votes in the run-off election will have their names placed on the annual meeting ballot for all members to consider. The annual meeting is scheduled for July 24 at the Lorain County Fairgrounds in Wellington.
The cooperative sent letters to all district residents announcing the special election.
