Trustee petitions available Feb. 9

Nominating petitions for the Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees will be available Monday, Feb. 9, at the cooperative's office in Wellington Township.

Just like candidates running for school board or township trustee, cooperative members interested in a seat on the cooperative's board will need to take out a district nominating petition and secure at least 25 signatures from members residing in their district.

Petitions must be filed with the cooperative by 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 9.

The maintenance map; System-aging study shows 60 percent of lines have been replaced since 2000

The Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative Operations Department mantra is rather simple: Preventive maintenance is the cheapest form of maintenance.

LMRE submits $4,246 letters to EPA

Ohio electric cooperatives are calling for the Environmental Protections Agency (EPA) to withdraw its "foolhardy endeavor" to limit carbon dioxide emissions from new and existing power plants and to develop rules that balance affordability and reliability.

The EPA comment period concluded Monday, Dec. 1, with cooperatives nationwide collecting more than 1.1 million comments in opposition to the agency's proposal to limit carbon dioxide emissions from new and existing power plants. Ohio submitted 120,000 comments through and websites.

People Fund has outstanding year, issues $82,000 in grants during 2014

The Lorain-Medina Rural Electric People Fund celebrated its 16th year in 2014. Since its inception in 1999, the fund has awarded $1,212,414 in grants. Recipients include churches, emergency responders and schools throughout the cooperative service area as well as individuals served by LMRE.

In 2014, the People Fund Board of Trustees issued 34 grants totaling $82,511.

Capital credits refunds surpase $20 million to members

For the 32nd consecutive year, Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative's current and former members are receiving patronage capital credits refunds form their cooperative.

The cooperative's board of trustees approved a patronage capital credits refund of $1,281,641 at its November meeting. Including this year's refund, over $20.2 million has been returned to members since 1982.

Rate adjustment effective Jan. 1; Phase 3 of Time-of-Day program implemented

The Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees revised the cooperative's rate schedule at its October meeting, approving a $2 per month increase in the Basic Service Charge and increased the Time-of-Day rate spread between on-peak and off-peak rates by one-half cent per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Co-op halts large-capacity water heater sales

One of Lorain-Medina Rural Electric Cooperative's most popular, long-standing and successful load-management programs has taken a broadside hit from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Electric resistance water heaters greater than 55 gallons cannot meet the Department of Energy's new energy efficiency standards that go into effect in April 2015. Effective immediately, the cooperative will no longer sell large-capacity water heaters.
